Maryvale on the Move

Imagine mobilizing a community and allocating its resources around the goal of purposefully creating the conditions that make raising healthy, active children a reachable reality for all residents! What might this child-friendly community look like in terms of convenient access to locally-grown, healthy, affordable, quality food and ample opportunities to be physically active in a safe environment?

Thanks to “Maryvale on the Move,” a four-year grant awarded in January 2010 by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, St. Luke’s Health Initiatives (SLHI) has the opportunity to engage others in answering these questions and in building a healthier community. Three community partners – Golden Gate Community Center, Rehoboth Community Development Corporation, and the Amigos Center of Wesley Community Center, and three additional resource partners – Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), Arizona Community Foundation (ACF), and the ASU Stardust Center for Affordable Homes and the Family, constitute the Maryvale on the Move leadership team, a body that provides the direction, experience, and support necessary to strategically envision and advocate for the necessary policy and environment changes that reflect healthy community design principles.
